John Toshack will not be resigning as Wales manager following a clear-the-air meeting with his own staff and senior Football Association of Wales officials today.
Toshack's stunned reaction to yesterday's dreadful 3-1 defeat by Cyprus, and the way he pointedly said he would have to 'look at himself' immediately cast doubts on his future in the job.
But FAW sources close to Toshack insist the 58-year-old will continue in the job because he "has a mission and a lot more work to do."
The first thing will be for him to put a side on the pitch in San Marino on Wednesday that can avoid even more shame on Wales.
The San Marino team have lost every international they have played, and the prospect of a shattered Wales becoming their first ever victims is too disastrous to contemplate.
Toshack met coach Dean Saunders, assistant Roy Evans and senior support staff in the team hotel this morning to discuss every aspect of the job they were doing.
Toshack also had discussions with FAW secretary general David Collins and president Peter Rees that were described as 'supportive and concerned.'
The question of Toshack leaving was not even discussed and it is believed he will re-affirm his position to stay on as manager tomorrow ahead of the flight to San Marino.
But he has serious problems to solve. It is thought that he does not have the total support of some senior players who are 'not on the same wavelength'.
The players had a free day today and attended a team meeting in the evening. The squad staff and medical team were due a trip to the beach as their day off, but that was cancelled to allow everyone in the party to present the right attitude and support for the squad.
