Cats appoint Byrne as new manager

Kilkenny City have appointed former Tipperary hurling goalkeeper Noel Byrne as caretaker boss until the end of the season.

The appointment arrives following the amicable departure of ex-Nottingham Forest midfielder Tommy Gaynor, who was only appointed manager at Buckley Park two months ago.

Byrne, who is also in charge of the City U21 side, said his target is to move Kilkenny away the bottom of the First Division table and steer the U21s into the play-offs.

He said: 'I will be wearing two hats between now and the end of the season and we have some crucial games coming up at senior and U21 level.

'The objective is to get the senior team off the bottom of the table. Our U21s are doing very well and are in line to make the play-offs following home and away wins over Cork City recently.'
