Michael Owen can expect to discover tomorrow whether he needs a hernia operation - but he already knows he is almost certain in any case to miss England's European Championship qualifiers next month because of a groin injury.
The Newcastle United striker will see a specialist to decide whether he needs surgery.
Club boss Sam Allardyce has confirmed Owen has a 3cm tear in his abductor muscle - an injury set to rule him out for most of the next month.
‘It will be three weeks out,’ Allardyce confirmed last night.
‘He would miss England with his groin - so we might as well check up whether he needs a hernia op or not, while he is out for two or three weeks with his abductor tear.’
