Under-21s can bounce back - Randolph

Darren Randolph is confident Ireland can bounce back from their defeat against Portugal

Republic of Ireland Under-21 goalkeeper Darren Randolph reckons the Irish can bounce back from their opening UEFA Championships qualifying group loss to Portugal.

The Charlton stopper was a busy man as the Irish lost 2-0 at home to the impressive Portuguese at Turner's Cross in Cork.

It was the worst possible start to the qualifying group for the Irish and their next competitive fixture is against England at the same venue.

Stuart Pearce's side beat Montenegro 3-0 last night to get off to a solid start on the road to Sweden 2009.

'I know a few of the English boys and I'm sure I'll get a few texts and calls in the coming weeks,' said Randolph.

'I won't say much as we get closer to the game because we have to concentrate on beating them now.

'That wasn't the start we wanted but they were a quality team. We didn't play the way we wanted but we can take positives from it and look towards the England game.

'Hopefully we can get our first win there. England are beatable. Most teams are. We have to do what we can do well and not worry about them too much. The England game should be two similar styles and let's hope we can do our best and get the win.'

Randolph, who was called into Steve Staunton's senior squad for the visit to San Marino in February, took little solace in a fine personal performance last night.

'A loss is a loss. I felt I could have done something about the first goal but I had to get that out of my head quickly and concentrate on the next one,' he said.

'When you have disappointments like that you don't really look at your own performance. It's about the team. I knew I'd busy and it was what I expected.

'The Portuguese are a very good side. I knew the keeper Ricardo Batista from Fulham and two of their players had been to Charlton.

'They were a quality side and it's what we expected. At this level you come up against the best and have to perform.'
