England manager Steve McClaren has confirmed Steven Gerrard will face Israel in tomorrow's crucial Euro 2008 qualifier at Wembley.

The Liverpool star has a broken toe but came through a training session today and it remains to be seen if he will require a pain-killing injection before a match England need to win to maintain realistic hopes of reaching next summer's finals in Switzerland and Austria.

However, fellow midfielder Owen Hargreaves remains a doubt because of a thigh injury sustained during training on Wednesday.

The Manchester United player will undergo a fitness test tomorrow morning.

McClaren also confirmed Paul Robinson will start in goal despite his mistake in the last England match against Germany.

McClaren said: 'Stevie has trained twice this week without an (pain-killing) injection and if he plays tomorrow like he did this morning everyone will be delighted.

'With Owen, we will leave it as late as possible to make a decision. He wants to play and we will give him every opportunity to do so.'

Aston Villa's Gareth Barry is expected to be handed defensive duties in the centre of midfield if Hagreaves fails to recover sufficiently to play in a match England must win if they are to retain a realistic chance of reaching next year's finals in Austria and Switzerland.

England trail group leaders Croatia and Israel by three points, although they have played one fewer game than Israel.

Russia, who play England on Wednesday, are third, one point above England.
