Ireland's last representatives in Europe bowed out tamely in Sweden tonight as Henrik Larsson's Helsingborg comfortably accounted for Drogheda United in their UEFA Cup second qualifying round second leg tie.
The Boynesiders held the game scoreless until half-time, but once the Swedes got their noses in front there was only one likely winner as Paul Doolin's team surrendered rather easily to their more illustrious opponents.
Drogheda boss Paul Doolin opted for a 4-5-1 formation, with Eamon Zayed as the lone striker, but they almost fell behind in disastrous circumstances with only a minute on the clock when Dan Connor completely mis-kicked in attempting to clear Jason Gavin's back pass.
The ball flew straight to Henrik Larsson who fired towards the top corner of the net, only for Connor to redeem himself with a fine tip-over save.
Drogheda survived the resulting corner, but Helsingborg quickly forced another from which Andreas Jacobsson sent a header crashing back off the crossbar.
After those early scares, the Boynesiders settled, and in the eighth minute they put together a superb sequence of passes, which ended with an Ollie Cahill cross and a total mis-kick 12 yards out from Eamon Zayed.
With only Zayed in attack, Drogheda struggled to retain possession for any length of time, and their cause was not helped by a series of mis-placed passes in dangerous positions.
Fredrik Svanback almost profited from Graham Gartland's carelessness, but Connor anticipated the Swede's attempted chip and clutched the ball under the crossbar.
The visitors did not have a single attempt at goal until the final minute of the half when Shane Robinson was fouled near the corner flag and Stuart Byrne's free-kick was nodded well wide by Gartland.
A more attacking approach was required in the second half from Doolin's side, but the manager retained the same personnel – and another bad defensive error almost gifted Helsingborg a 46th-minute goal.
This time Gartland mis-cued a back pass and Connor had to sprint from his goal to deny the lurking Larsson.
Razak Omotoyossi, who had until then been well policed by Gavin, completely mis-kicked in front of goal in the 49th minute after good wing play by Svanback,
However, Drogheda's luck ran out three minutes later when Simon Webb's accidental trip on Christoffer Andersson resulted in a free-kick just outside the penalty area.
Andreas Dahl floated in a dangerous ball that bobbled around in the box before Jacobsson fired decisively past Connor from eight yards.
Needing a goal to force extra time, Drogheda immediately reshuffled, with midfielder James Keddy making way for young English striker Guy Bates.
But the Helsingborgs defence held firm, and it was the Swedes who doubled their advantage in the 68th minute when Omotoyossi got on the end of a sweeping move and beat Connor at his near post.
A tiring Zayed was then substituted for Aidan O'Keeffe, but Drogheda never looked likely to score the two goals required, and Olivier Karekezi added a third for the Swedes in injury-time.
After the game Doolin said: 'Helsingborg were the better side. I knew it would be a tough game and that's the way it was.
'However, for the first ten minutes we weathered it a bit. We then we got into the game ourselves and had some good passages of play.
'At half-time I probably would have been quite happy at 0-0 then they got the break after half-time and they finished out as worthy winners.'
