Wexford Youths 3-0 Kilkenny City

In this bottom of the table clash, three second-half goals moved Wexford Youths four points clear of bottom side Kilkenny City in the eircom League First Division.

The opening forty-five minutes at the Wexford Youths Complex was devoid of good football, and, not surprisingly, failed to produce a goal.

While both sides attempted to play positive football, their lack of a good first touch saw the half riddled with mistakes with neither side able to retain possession.

After eleven minutes, the visitors came close to scoring, with Barry Ryan’s low shot tipped around the post by home ‘keeper Jason Russell, but that was their last worthwhile chance of the half.

Wexford Youths rallied in the closing twenty minutes of the first period, but it quickly became apparent why they have scored only sixteen league goals all season.

They had only one direct shot on goal, with Gavin Doyle's twenty-sixth minute effort well held by ‘keeper Andrew J. Murray, but it was no surprise that the game was locked at 0-0 come the interval.

Kilkenny City came close to opening the scoring after fifty-one minutes, when Russell sliced his clearance into the path of Barry Ryan, but the ‘keeper atoned with a fine save.

Eight minutes later Wexford's best chance up to that point fell to Conor Sinnott, who, after a good run, had his shot deflected for a fruitless corner.

Enlivened by this move, Youths took the lead after sixty-eight minutes when the now influential Sinnott crashed a twenty-metre effort low into the net.

Barely a minute later, Sinnott struck again, making it 2-0 from the penalty spot after Thomas Hughes impeded Richie Fitzgerald inside the area.

On ninety minutes substitute Kyle Dempsey made it 3-0 when he rounded the ‘keeper to slot home.
