Republic of Ireland Under-21 manager Don Givens is on a collision course with Sunderland after Anthony Stokes failed to report for international duty.
Black Cats striker Stokes, 19, failed to meet up with the Irish squad before they flew out to meet Germany in a friendly clash at Furth tonight.
The young Dubliner cited an unspecified injury suffered against Wigan Athletic at the weekend when he was eventually contacted by Givens.
Givens believes the club and the player are culpable for failing to inform the Football Association of Ireland of any injury suffered.
'What really annoys me is that it has denied another player a place in the squad,' said the Under-21 boss. 'I rang Anthony on his mobile to ask him where he was and he said: "I'm in Dublin, did the boss not get in touch with you?"
'I told Anthony that I'd heard nothing and he said: "Well, I picked up a knock on Saturday and the boss told me twice that he'd sort it".
'My reaction was that it was also his responsibility to phone me. I'm very disappointed to find myself in that position.
'As soon as the squad was announced Blackburn were on to me to tell me that Keith Treacy was injured and offered to send me the results of his scan. That shows how thorough they are.
'I'm very disappointed to find another Premier League club not behaving in a similar fashion.'
Sunderland's medical staff had spoken to the FAI as recently as Saturday due to an injury to Paul McShane which forced him to withdraw from the senior squad on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Givens has backed Stephen O'Halloran to make a major impact this season.
The Aston Villa defender was one of the success stories of the Irish senior side's US trip in May when he performed well against Ecuador and Bolivia.
'I watched Stephen in pre-season and you can see how much his confidence has come on,' said Givens.
'He played very well for the Villa first team and if he continues that form he can go a long way. I think he can be a big asset for the Under-21s and then the rest is up to him.'
