Celtic have drawn 1-1 in the first leg of their Champions League third qualifying round match against Spartak Moscow in Russia.

Russian international striker Roman Pavlyuchenko saved the day for Spartak after Paul Hartley was on target for Celtic at the synthetic pitch of Moscow's 83,000-seater Luzhniki stadium - the  arena for the final on 21 May.

Spartak seized the initiative right from the kick-off whistle pinning their rivals back but to no immediate avail as they lacked precision in front of Celtic's goal, where Mark Brown was in to replace Artur Boruc.

But in the ninth minute Brown was unable to prevent a Pavlyuchenko strike, which was however disallowed by German referee Herbert Fandel because of an arguable offside.

Spartak still dominated play but it was Celtic midfielder Hartley, who netted the opening goal firing home with a 15-yard header from Scott McDonald's right-handed cross 21 minutes into the match.

The hosts rushed ahead seeking an equaliser and their Brazilian striker Soares Welliton missed a clear chance just after the half-hour mark, sending the ball just inches wide with a close-range header from Vladimir Bystrov's cross.

But Spartak managed to level three minutes before the break when Pavlyuchenko sent the ball in with a header from the edge of the six-yard box from Roman Shishkin's cross.

Spartak's Dmitry Torbinsky had an opportunity to put his side in front just a minute later but the visitors' full-back Mark Wilson intervened.

After the interval nine-time Russian champions Spartak dominated, creating some more clear scoring chances but failed to deliver as Celtic defended stoutly.

The guests also missed their chance to grab victory six minutes from time when goalie Stipe Pletikosa dived to save Spartak's net from Scott Brown's breakaway attempt.
