Dundee United manager Craig Levein has bolstered his squad for the new season by recruiting Cardiff youngster Willo Flood on loan.

The 22-year-old creative midfielder has agreed a year-long deal with the Tannadice club.

Flood has been capped at under-21 level for the Republic of Ireland and made 25 appearances for Cardiff last season following a £200,000 switch from Manchester City.

He has been tipped for a bright future in the Coca-Cola Championship but boss Dave Jones wants to see how he copes with a season in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League.

Levein claims United beat off competition from several other clubs to land the player's signature and is confident he will prove to be a decent acquisition in the season ahead.

He told the club's official website, www.dundeeunitedfc.co.uk: 'I'm confident he will do well for Dundee United. His style of play suits the SPL and will make him a firm favourite with our supporters.

'I was aware that a number of other clubs were interested in taking him and am pleased that Cardiff City see this move as an opportunity for the player to improve his game.

'Most of all however, I'm delighted because I see him as an important player for us next season.'
