Second in the table Cobh Ramblers moved back to within two points of league leaders Dundalk following this narrow win over Wexford Youths at St Colman's Park.

Ramblers struck the only goal after 19 minutes.

Russell, and midfielder John Kearney finished from a couple of yards.

The homeside dominated the first half, but could not add to their lead, Wexford came more into the match after the break, Marty Kelly with their best effort, which was saved.

Ramblers had not lost a league match since they were defeated by Wexford the last time the two sides had met nine games back in the first round of the campaign.

So Stephen Henderson's side started as if they meant buisness and took the game to the Eircom leagues new comers from the kick off.  

The crucial score came when captain Alan Carey struck a powerful free kick, Wexford goalkeeper Jason Russell with a strong sun in his eyes touched the ball on to the crossbar, and their was John Kearney with his first senior goal for the club, heading home from close range.

Despite Cobh dominating the play the visitors defended well and held out for the half time break.

Wexford came into the match in the second period and former county senior hurler Marty Kelly forced a save from Ramblers goalkeeper James McCarthy, with a low shot after 70 minutes.

Cobh finished the stronger and winger Davin O'Neill cut in from the touchline to shoot narrowly wide on 81 minutes, the home fans in a crowd of 520 were happy in the end as their side have streched their unbeaten run to nine league games without defeat.
