Athlone Town's unbeaten record at their new stadium came to an end as two goals from Padraig Amond earned Kildare County all three points in a 2-0 win at Lissywollen.

Athlone had won their first two league games at the stadium and also defeated Longford Town on penalties there, in a League Cup encounter.

However, they were second best on this occasion as striker Amond showed composure in front of goal to give County their first win of the season.

Kildare took the lead with their first significant attack on 27 minutes.

Athlone failed to clear Philip Gorman's blocked shot on goal and the ball broke kindly for Amond, who blasted home from close range.

Athlone had a good chance to respond six minutes later when Colm Heffernan got on the end of Stevie Gavin's cross, but he blazed the ball well over the bar.

The first half produced little entertainment and the second period was no improvement.

Athlone's Paul McTiernan raced onto a Noel McGee pass to find the net after 55 minutes, but the home fans' celebrations were short-lived, as the linesman had flagged for offside.

At the other end, Amond made sure of the result on 68 minutes.

Town defenders Jim Sheridan and Ronan Frawley both contested the same high ball and, when it broke loose, Amond nipped in behind the pair to cleverly direct his shot over the head of home goalkeeper Danny O'Leary.

Athlone were never really able to get a foothold in the game.

In the 90th minute, winger Colm Heffernan hit the target with a low drive but Kildare defender Philip Byrne was well-placed to clear the ball off the line.

After a positive opening to the season, Athlone have now lost three league games in a row. Kildare, meanwhile, move off the foot of the Division One table.
