Barnsley and Birmingham City have been charged by the Football Association following a mass confrontation involving players and officials from both teams during the Coca-Cola Championship clash at Oakwell on Monday.

The clubs have been charged with failing to ensure their players and/or club officials conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and/or refrained from provocative behaviour. They have until 26 April to respond.

The incident was sparked by an initial spat between Birmingham striker Nicklas Bendtner and Tykes centre-half Antony Kay.

Blues substitute Neil Danns and home defender Bobby Hassall were given their marching orders after the final whistle by referee Mike Russell.

The flare-up occurred at the end of a 1-0 defeat for Birmingham which has damaged their chances of gaining automatic promotion to the Barclays Premiership.
