Holders Sevilla came from a goal behind to claim a 2-1 win at home to Tottenham Hotspur in their UEFA Cup quarter-final first leg and end the English side's eight-match winning streak in the competition.

Tottenham got off to a dream start when the in-form Robbie Keane put them in front with less than two minutes on the clock and proceeded to dominate the opening quarter of an hour.

But Sevilla got back on level terms when former Tottenham striker Frederic Kanoute scored a controversial 19th-minute penalty awarded when keeper Paul Robinson scooped the ball away from the feet of midfielder Adriano Correia as he darted into the area.

The goal gave Sevilla a new lease of life and they took the lead in the 36th minute, Russian striker Alexander Kerzhakov turning a header past Robinson after some poor defending from the Tottenham back four.

The two sides maintained the high tempo throughout the second half, but despite enjoying several good scoring opportunities they were unable to find the net and the tie remains delicately balanced ahead of next week's return at White Hart Lane.

The match was marked by ugly clashes which started before halftime between police and Tottenham fans.
