Toshack laments lack of winners

Wales boss John Toshack believes his side need more winners like Ryan Giggs.

Wales go into tonight's Euro 2008 qualifier in Cardiff's Millennium Stadium knowing they must win well against San Marino to rebuild confidence and credibility in the Toshack regime in the eyes of the Welsh public.

The game comes on the back of a limp defeat in Dublin by the Republic of Ireland that has made qualification from Group D an almost impossible task for Wales.

Toshack has looked at the mindset of his young squad and he believes a dearth of medals and championships means his players lack a winning mentality.

Toshack said: 'We have one player who has won everything over and over and over again.

'But if you look around the rest of the squad, none of them have won anything. It is maybe an attitude that we have to contend with.

'Maybe it is the lack of a winning mentality. When you have tasted it, you want more of it and when it goes you get worried and want it back.

'A winning mentality was drummed into me at Liverpool but, apart from Ryan Giggs, we are not a group of people who understand and have won a lot.'

Toshack also sees far more players fighting against relegation with their club sides than aiming to win things, and that too can bring an acceptance of defeat.

He said: 'When you look at our back line you see players who are all mainly in relegation fights. Sam Ricketts at Hull, James Collins with West Ham, Lewin Nyatanga at Barnsley, there is a problem.

'While Steve Evans, who played very well in Dublin, has Wrexham's fight to stay in the league on his mind.

'But they have to put all of that sort of thing to the back of their minds.'

Even goalkeeper Danny Coyne, an assured performer in Dublin, is involved in a relegation fight with Burnley.

Those sort of seasons put a huge drain on players' mentalities and confidence, and Toshack maybe feels it is not helping the Wales cause.

But he needs a quick and positive reaction to that Irish defeat, similar to the one that followed the 5-1 home mauling by Slovakia earlier in the season.

He said: 'What we have to do is react the way we did after losing to Slovakia, we did that with the win over Cyprus. We have to do the same again.'

Despite agreeing in the aftermath of the Irish defeat that chances of qualification were virtually over, Toshack has set other targets.

He said: 'What we have to do is win to get our confidence back. But we must also look at the positives.

'If we can beat San Marino twice we will have nine points. We have two games in hand on the Irish, and if we can beat them when they come to Cardiff, and we are capable of that, we will be right behind them.

'If we can then get something from the Czechs when they come to Cardiff, we will be back in it. We have to think like that, we are capable of such results.'
