Steve Gerrard has warned England have a collective responsibility to end their goal drought and admits the pressure is mounting on the squad in their bid to reach the Euro 2008 finals.
The Liverpool captain conceded Steve McClaren's side are currently underdogs to reach Austria and Switzerland after drawing another blank during the 0-0 draw with Israel in Tel Aviv.
They have managed just one goal in their last five internationals - an almost unthinkable statistic given the fire-power the likes of Wayne Rooney, Andrew Johnson, Gerrard and Frank Lampard show at club level.
But the midfielder insisted it was not just the front players who should shoulder the blame for England's alarming lack of potency.
'Why is that? I can't put my finger on it. We've got players who can score goals.
'You see that week in and week out in the Premiership but we've struggled over the last four or five internationals in front of goal.
'We need to improve in the final third but you can't just put it down to the strikers. You've got to blame the six or seven players in the final third.
'It's down to myself, Frank Lampard, Aaron Lennon and the rest of the midfield to help the forwards to score goals. You can't just put the responsibility on the strikers.'
England should dispose of Andorra in Barcelona on Wednesday and Gerrard is aware they need to string together a run of wins if they are to climb into the top two in their qualifying group.
He said: 'There is already pressure on us. We didn't get the win we wanted in Israel so there is even more pressure on us, but as a footballer you've got to deal with that.
'Are we underdogs to qualify? I think it looks that way at the moment, but a few victories can soon make that table look a lot different.
'It felt like a defeat in Israel but, if we put a few wins together, we can turn it around.
'We should have won the game. We didn't. It's important we get the three points on Wednesday and then move on.’
He added: 'As one of the more experienced players in the squad, I've got to try and remain positive. I'm not going to throw the towel in now and give up on things.
'It would be daft of me to say we are not going to qualify when we are only about halfway through the group.
'We have still got a great chance of qualifying if we string a run of wins together but we have got to look to improve in the final third. Then we will get the wins we deserve.'
