Classy Cork put four past Portadown

A missed penalty cost Roy O'Donovan a well deserved hat-trick
A missed penalty cost Roy O'Donovan a well deserved hat-trick

Cork City recorded their first win of the season with a very good second half performance saw them overcome Portadown 4-0 in this Setanta Group 2 match.

After a scoreless first half Cork jumped in front 60 seconds after the break, with Roy O'Donovan shooting low past Kevin Pressman from 15 yards.

Cillian Lordan belted home a 25-yard screamer to make it 2-0 on the hour.

Goalkeeper Pressman mis-kicked a Peter Kennedy backpass to allow O'Donovan in for his second and Cork's third goal with 15 minutes remaining, but Pressman made amends saving an O'Donovan penalty kick to deny the striker a hat-trick.

Substitute Ray Lally made it 4-0 for Cork with his first goal for the club in the last minute.

Cork, without a win in their first four games of the season, were without three regular midfielders for this match.

Joe Gamble was suspended and both Colin O'Brien and Liam Kearney were injured, although Kearney was a substitute.

After St Patrick's Athletic and Dungannon had drawn on Monday night, both Cork and Portadown were bottom of the group.

However, a win for either side at Turners Cross would have moved them above Dungannon and into second place behind the Dublin side.

In the first 45 minutes the closest to a goal was a shot from O'Donovan which cracked off former Sheffield Wednesday netminder Pressman's crossbar.

But Cork played well after the break. Roy O'Donovan's first helped settle the side, with Cillian Lordan's shot from 25 yards an absolute cracker.

O'Donovan showed his pace to avail of Pressman's error and would have deserved a hat-trick, However the 'keeper's fine penalty save with ten minutes remaining prevented such an occurrence.

Ray Lally was only on the pitch a couple of minutes when he scored his first senior goal for the club in the last minute.
