Wexford Youths marked their home debut in the eircom League of Ireland First Division with a 1-0 victory over Cobh Ramblers at Wexford Youth Centre today.
A gale force wind made it difficult for controlled football but Cobh Ramblers failed to use the advantage of the elements when they were in their favour.
While they dominated the opening half with seven corners they only came close to breaking the deadlock on two occasions.
Just two minutes into the game, centre-back Kevin Murray powerfully headed an Alan Carey free-kick to the corner of the net but the goal was ruled out for an infringement.
Wexford Youths were confined to breakaways but it was Cobh who once again came close on 12 minutes. However, Murray's low shot was well handled by home keeper Jason Russell leaving the sides going in scoreless at the interval.
Tom Elmes proved the local hero with a 57th minute goal. Elmes ran on to a long ball from keeper Russell and rounded the ‘keeper to tap the ball into an unguarded net.
It proved the crucial score as the Wexford back four proved outstanding, while Marty Kelly and Conor Sinnott controlled midfield.
Ramblers had their chances to share the points but substitute Davin O'Neill was denied by home keeper Jason Russell who saved brilliantly at the left-hand post after 60 minutes. The same player blazed two further efforts the wrong side of the posts when it seemed easier to score.
It was a historic occasion for Wexford Youths in front of 2,100 supporters, with Elmes creating his own piece of history with the first ever league goal at the excellent Wexford Youth complex.
The three points sends them up to joint-second in the table a marvellous start for the newcomers, while for Cobh Ramblers it was their second successive defeat have lost their opening game to Limerick 37.
