Rangers' European dream died a death in Spain as Osasuna won 1-0 to reach the UEFA Cup quarter-finals.
Rangers were always going to find it hard going having drawn the first leg 1-1 at Ibrox a week ago.
But that could not excuse a lacklustre performance in which they could easily have lost more convincingly.
They were even the architects of their own downfall as comical defending on 71 minutes handed Cameroon international Pierre Webo the simple task of slotting home.
Ian Murray had failed to win a header in the box and then David Weir fluffed his clearance before Webo notched the game winner.
That actually changed little for the Scots who knew before the game they had to score to avoid elimination.
But from the first whistle it was Walter Smith's side who were under the cosh.
Ugo Ehiogu, the hero of Rangers' 1-0 win at bitter rivals Celtic at the weekend, almost turned to villain in the opening minutes of this contest as his misplaced pass set up Bernardo Romeo.
But the former Aston Villa defender breathed a sigh of relief as Romeo fired wide.
Moments later Murray fouled Cesar Azpilicueta and Gomez Juanlu curled the resulting free-kick just over the bar. The game was not even five minutes old.
Rangers survived to half-time with the scores level but at the start of the second period, once again they almost shot themselves in the foot.
Murray was again the guilty party as he handled in his own area but luckily got away with it.
After the goal came, Rangers finally woke up but they created little and never looked like forcing extra-time with an equaliser.
