The Management Committee of Shelbourne FC last night invited Finbarr Flood to take up the post of club chairman during Ollie Byrne's absence.
Byrne was taken to St James Hospital on Tuesday evening and is likely to undergo surgery.
Byrne has been under immense pressure since Shelbourne won the eircom Premier League in November, because of the club's financial troubles.
Flood will run the club on a caretaker basis.
