Reggina punishment reduced by four

Reggina's punishment for their part in the match-fixing scandal has been reduced by four points to 11 by the Italian Olympic Committee following an appeal.

The announcement was made on Tuesday and, although Reggina will be pleased to have had their sanction cut, they will be disappointed the Committee did not go further as the Amaranto club strive to avoid relegation.

'This is an unjust sentence because Reggina is innocent,' said club president Pasquale Foti.

The ruling does at least see Reggina climb off the foot of the Serie A standings for the first time this season.

They have moved three points above Ascoli, who now prop up the rest.

Walter Mazzarri's Reggina side have actually had a fine start to the season on the pitch. They have won five of their opening 15 matches - the same number as AC Milan - and now find themselves just one point adrift of Chievo, who occupy the final spot above the drop zone.

Reggina's reduction is the latest in a long-running saga which has done little for the credibility of the Italian game.

Juventus, who won the title last season before being stripped of the crown after the investigation, were initially relegated to Serie B and handed a 17-point penalty for the new campaign. However, on appeal that was reduced to nine although their demotion stood.

Lazio and Fiorentina were also handed semi-reprieves.

The Biancoceleste got back eight of the 11 points they were originally docked while the Viola were handed back four of the 19 they initially lost.

AC Milan were the only club involved not to see a reduction in their original sanction of eight points.
