Police in the UK today arrested a 20-year-old man on suspicion of attempting to murder footballer Ronnie Wallwork.
The 29-year-old West Bromwich Albion player, who is currently on loan at Barnsley, was stabbed in the back, hand and stomach in a Manchester city centre bar last week.
Robert Rimmer handed himself in to officers at a police station in the city about midday today following an appeal for him to come forward.
He is being questioned in police custody.
Wallwork had been enjoying a night out with his girlfriend at the Sugar Lounge bar on Whitworth Street, Manchester, on 30 November when he was attacked shortly after 11.30pm.
Bar staff gave the soccer star first aid before he was taken to the Manchester Royal Infirmary for treatment.
Wallwork is said to be recovering and in a stable condition.
A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: 'Police have arrested a 20-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder following the recent stabbing of a 29-year-old man at a city centre bar.
'The 20-year-old handed himself in to a Manchester police station at about midday today. He remains in police custody for questioning.'
Wallwork worked his way up though the youth teams at Manchester United before being sent to Carlisle United, Stockport County and Royal Antwerp on loan.
While in Belgium he was banned from football for life after allegedly attacking a referee but this was reduced on appeal.
Three years later, Wallwork joined West Brom on a free transfer after making 28 appearances for United.
