Hayden Mullins' first-half header gave West Ham the victory they needed – a 1-0 win over Sheffield United – to get the Eggert Magnusson era off to a winning start.
But the Upton Park success over struggling Sheffield United was never a formality and the home side were relieved when Blades substitute Christian Nade failed to hit the target from point-blank range.
As the Hammers missed chances to seal the victory, the Blades had a stoppage-time goal disallowed for a foul on goalkeeper Robert Green.
