Athlone Town finish season on a high

Athlone Town finished their season on a high note with a 2-0 victory over Limerick FC at Hogan Park.

Strikes in either half from Carmine Russo and Kevin Williamson secured the points for the Midlanders.

Russo drilled home from 25 yard on 15 minutes following a neat lay off from Williamson. And Williamson doubled his side's advantage with a low shot from inside the box with 18 minutes remaining.

Kevin Waters had a header ruled out for offside just past the hour mark as Limerick went in search of an equaliser.

Paul Finnucane went close with another header late on but was denied by Town 'keeper Robert Forde.

Eric Lavine almost opened the visitors' account  on nine minutes taking advantage of a defensive mishap only to be thwarted by a top class save from Lims 'keeper Austin O'Neill.

Barrett almost restored parity for Danny Drew's side on the half hour mark but his close-range header from a Colm Heffernan cross drifted just outside the post.

Limerick started the second half on the up with Conor Molan and Barrett, with an astute chip from a Heffernan lay off, both going close.

Athlone defender Stephen Feeney was then breathing a sigh of relief after Forde clawed his header from a Molan free kick-which was destined for the back of his net-from under the crossbar.

At the other end, O'Neill pulled off a fantastic double save to first deny Des Hope's long- range drive and then finger tip Mark Sherlock's effort from the rebound to safety.

Conor Sinnott, who had a fine game for Limerick in midfield, tested Forde with a 25-yard drive with four minutes remaining but it just wasn't to be for Limerick on the night.
