Big guns progress in the Champions League

Karim Benzema netted his sixth goal of the season in all competitions as Lyon qualified for the second round of the Champions League with an easy 1-0 victory over Dynamo Kiev.

The 18-year-old raced onto a Sidney Govou through-ball to slot the only goal of the match after 13 minutes and make it four wins from four Champions League Group E matches for the French champions.

Kiev attempted to bounce back, but rarely made it out of their own half as Gerard Houllier's side, which has now won its past 13 games in all competitions, barely broke from trot to gallop en route to reaching the competition's second phase for the fourth time in four seasons.

Real Madrid also booked their place in the next round of the Champions League, but they needed a farcical own goal from Banel Nicolita to see off battling Steaua Bucharest.

Real had been unable to break down a resilient Steaua backline themselves but were gifted the only goal of the game by a horrendous error from Nicolita 20 minutes from time.

Steaua goalkeeper Cornel Cernea had moved away from his goal to receive the back pass but Nicolita, with no Real player anywhere near him, inexplicably rolled the ball back towards goal and into the unguarded net.

That proved to be the deciding incident of the game, and with Lyon beating Dynamo Kiev, Real's place in the next round was secure.

Porto notched up an impressive 3-1 victory in Hamburg to boost their chances of qualification from Champions League Group G and end any lingering hopes that the German side still had.

Captain Lucho Gonzalez opened the scoring for the away side with a magnificent 25-yard volley just on the stroke of half-time.

And when Lisandro Lopez added a second for the visitors on the hour mark, the game looked a foregone conclusion.

Rafael van der Vaart gave the home crowd hope when his header reduced the deficit 60 seconds later but Bruno Moraes made sure of all three points for the away side late on.

The result means that Jesualdo Ferreira's outfit now lie in joint second place with Arsenal, both just one point behind leaders CSKA Moscow.

Kaka scored a hat-trick as AC Milan all but secured a place in the knockout stages of the Champions League with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Anderlecht in Group H.

Anderlecht coach Franky Vercauteren had correctly anticipated that the Brazilian wizard would present the biggest threat for his team and he was right.

Kaka opened the scoring in the seventh minute from the penalty spot before doubling his team's lead midway through the first half.

The Brazilian international added his third of the evening in the 56th minute with a beautiful strike to bring the fans at the San Siro to their feet.

Defender Roland Juhasz reduced the deficit with a fine header on the hour mark before Alberto Gilardino added the final goal two minutes from time.

Nikolaos Liberopoulos scored a superb winner to give AEK Athens a precious 1-0 victory over ten-man Lille and re-ignite the Greek team's hope of reaching the knockout stage.

Liberopoulos fired in a long range shot with just 16 minutes left as Lorenzo Serra Ferrer's AEK finally broke the spirit of a brave Lille side who played for over an hour with a player less due to defender Efstathios Tavlaridis's first-half dismissal for two yellow cards.

The win puts AEK on four points - a single point behind second-placed Lille - in Group H with two games remaining.

Lille's Greek defender Tavlaridis experienced a miserable return to his native country after he was sent off for collecting two yellow cards in a tensely contested first half.

The former Iraklis and Arsenal defender was booked as early as the third minute for an over zealous lunge on Liberopoulos as the hosts burst out of the starting blocks and saw red 19 minutes later for a late challenge on Perparim Hetemaj as the AEK midfielder raced toward the Lille left touchline.
