Rafael Benitez has warned against complacency when Liverpool bid to secure qualification for the last 16 of the Champions League tonight.
The Reds beat Bordeaux on their own ground 1-0 a fortnight ago and arrive for the Anfield encounter bottom of Group C.
That suggests Liverpool should find few problems in moving into the next phase of the competition, but Benitez warned his players to 'remember Benfica'.
Last season Liverpool lost both legs of their tie with the Portuguese side, having expected an easier ride following qualification from the group stages.
The Spanish boss said: 'Two seasons ago we were talking about games against great sides like Juventus, Chelsea and Bayer Leverkusen and getting past those teams.
'Then last season we were facing Benfica, who everyone felt we should have beaten. But it wasn't like that, they won both matches and we were out.
'Every team in this competition has match-winners, people who can punish you. It underlines that we must not expect to beat Bordeaux.'
He added: 'It is important for us to win this one and to qualify, we are really close and we want to be able to move on into the last game against Galatasaray in Istanbul knowing we are safely through.'
Bordeaux built a reputation for being defensively solid in finishing as runners-up to Lyon in the French championship last season, and Benitez said: 'Bordeaux are more comfortable playing away from home, that is the problem for us. They play 4-5-1, or 4-4-1-1. It is easier to play like this away from home.
'They have players who can counter-attack and use the space the home team leaves when they attack. We must be very aware of this.
'Do not think that this is an easy game because they are bottom of the group. They have good players, every team in this competition has good players who can win games, so we must not think this is three points already.
'But now we face a team who are bottom of the group knowing it is hard for them to qualify. They are playing without very much pressure, but they will want to attack and to show what they can do.
'Always teams like this have quality, and they can play better football from this position. We must be focused on the fact that if we win we can qualify.'
Liverpool have won their previous home group match this season against Galatasaray with a fine attacking display, despite being hauled back to just 3-2 in a nervy conclusion.
Benitez said: 'We would like to start the game as we did at home to Galatasaray, with a quick tempo that put us in control. It was the same against (Aston) Villa, the way we started with our pace and goals, gave us command.
'If we can start like that against Bordeaux the task will become more controllable. Then you can use the quality of your own players. But if they play like they usually do away from home, with just one main striker, then we know it will be difficult and we must be careful not to get caught on the counter-attack.
'They have pace and can be dangerous. But we must play with our high tempo and that will put us into a strong position.
'The first thing is to win, it is important to finish first in the group and we would need to beat PSV Eindhoven in our next match to be sure of that.'
Liverpool have injury worries over five players, including skipper Steven Gerrard. He has a minor ankle injury, as has Mohamed Sissoko - both from Saturday's victory over Aston Villa. Mark Gonzalez missed that game with a similar injury, while Craig Bellamy (calf) and Fabio Aurelio (hamstring) are also doubts.
