Paul McGrath has branded the England manager's post as 'the worst job in football'.

In his recently-released autobiography, McGrath has questioned Steve McClaren's credentials for the role, claiming the man he worked with at Derby lacked sufficient experience.

The former Republic of Ireland defender has spent the last two weeks attempting to clarify his comments as he publicised his warts-and-all life story, chronicling well-documented drink problems and two suicide attempts.

Rather than feel McClaren as an individual is not up to the task, McGrath is more of the opinion that no-one is.

'I would say it is the worst job in football,' he said. 'When you look at the things the media did to Sven (Goran Eriksson), it was truly awful. To me, the job is poisonous.

'Graham Taylor is one of the nicest men I ever met, yet pictures of him appear with a turnip superimposed onto his side. Maybe he laughs about it now, but was it really necessary? His family must have been appalled.'
