Sunderland boss Roy Keane today moved to shore up his struggling defence by swooping for teenage Welsh international defender Lewin Nyatanga.

The 18-year-old has joined the Black Cats on loan from Derby until January, and after training with his new team-mates for this first time this morning, could go straight into the squad for Saturday's Coca-Cola Championship clash with Barnsley at the Stadium of Light.

Nyatanga played 25 times for the Rams last season, but has managed only six appearances during the current campaign despite playing for his country in their recent Euro 2008 eight qualifiers against Slovakia and Cyprus.

Keane said: 'Lewin is a very good young player and we are looking at any player we think can help improve the squad.'
