Cobh edge out Monaghan

Cobh Ramblers moved back into fourth position in the eircom League First Division following this hard fought win 2-1 over Monaghan at St Colman's Park.

All the goal action was in the second half with the home side going in front through a solo goal from Graham Cummins after 51 minutes. He showed strength and pace to shake off two defenders, before beating Robbie Horgan following a rebound off the goalkeeper.

It was 2-0 just after the hour,Davin O'Neill's shot hit the crossbar and substitute Michael Mulconry slotted home the loose ball.

Austin McCann struck home a 78th minute Monaghan goal but the home side held out for the three points.

The win moves Ramblers back above Limerick who defeated Kilkenny last night and improves a run that saw them lose four of their last five league matches. It also would have pleased manager Stephen Henderson
who was unable to take his place in the dugout, as he is serving a touchline ban.

Monaghan worked hard despite a depleted squad that saw them have just three players on the bench, and they were further hit with injury, when striker Robbie Farrell was carried off on a stretcher with ligament damage five minutes before the break.

The visitors should have gone in at the break in front, when Paul Smyth found himself in behind the defence with just goalkeeper Packie Holden to beat, but Smyth blazed wide from eight yards out.

Smyth did however make up for that miss, when with his side trailing by two goals, he raced down the left wing before picking out the in rushing Austin McCann, who hit a ground shot past Holden from fifteen yards.

The home 'keeper was forced to make a diving save in stoppage time, when a deflected shot flew off the body of tall striker David Lee,and was looping towards the top of the Cobh net.
