Elliott out of Northern Ireland squad

Hull forward Stuart Elliott has been ruled out of Northern Ireland's Euro 2008 qualifier against Latvia on Wednesday.

Elliott is returning to the Coca-Cola Championship club because of a stomach problem.

Ivan Sproule of Hibernian has been drafted in to replace Elliott in the squad.

Michael Duff will also miss the game after he picked up his second booking of the qualifying campaign in his side's 0-0 draw with Denmark.

Taylor said: 'It was important to get a clean sheet. We worked hard on a difficult pitch to get our rewards. I cannot just praise the back four, though. Every player put themselves on the line.

'Going to Denmark and getting a point has to be up there with one of best performances.'

Manager Lawrie Sanchez accepts that Northern Ireland are at their best when the odds are against them.

It is when dealing with teams like Latvia and others close to them in the world rankings that problems occur.

'It was a good night in Denmark but that was the easy part,' he said. 'I always felt we could get something out of the game even though they were the favourites.

'The hard part comes on Wednesday when we will be expected to beat Latvia. But that could prove difficult.'
