A dream goal for Kenny Miller against his old club secured Celtic a 2-0 win at home to Rangers in the Scottish Premier League on Saturday.

The Scottish international, one of the few men to play for both sides of the Old Firm, completed the scoring with a well taken goal in the 73rd minute to clinch victory after former Denmark international Thomas Gravesen's diving header had given them the lead in the first-half.

Celtic had dominated from the start and Miller, still looking for his first goal for the Parkhead club, had the first effort on goal in the fourth minute.

Japanese international Shunsuke Nakamura's deep cross from the right was headed back across goal by Gary Caldwell and the former Wolves player sent a looping header goalward which Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor saved comfortably under his crossbar.

In the eighth minute, Miller had another chance to open the scoring when a long ball through from Lee Naylor put him through on goal but with McGregor closing the angle his lob drifted a foot over the bar.

Nakamura took advantage of a Barry Ferguson mistake in the 20th minute to test the Rangers 'keeper with an 18-yard drive which McGregor did well to punch away.

Rangers were struggling to test Celtic's goal and two long-range efforts from Charlie Adam, one a free-kick, which both missed the target, were their only efforts on goal in the opening 45 minutes.

Dutch international striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink was next to test the Rangers 'keeper with a shot from 20-yards in the 24th minute which forced McGregor to dive low to his left to parry away.

But in the 34th minute, Celtic finally broke the deadlock. Neil Lennon floated the ball across from the right and the highly impressive Aiden McGeady rose to power in a header which was brilliantly saved by McGregor.

Unfortunately for the 'keeper the ball spun skywards into the path of Gravesen and from only a few yards out he dived to head over the line for his first Celtic goal since signing from Real Madrid in August.

The second-half was a more even affair even though both goalkeepers had little to do.

Nakamura shot wide from 20-yards in the 49th minute for Celtic and at the other end a Barry Ferguson pass put Kris Boyd through in the 64th minute only for the Rangers striker to blast well over from 18-yards.

In the 73rd minute, however, Miller scored the goal he had been dreaming about to double his side's advantage.

Republic of Ireland international McGeady drove forward from inside his own half and then split the Rangers defence with a perfectly-weighted pass to put in Miller, who had made a run in from the left, and the Scottish international striker poked the ball under the body of the advancing McGregor and into the net.

Rangers tried to hit back and in the 77th minute Dado Prso's powerful header, from Adams' corner, beat Celtic's Polish 'keeper Artur Boruc only to be cleared off the line by Naylor.

Boyd was then denied by the woodwork in the 80th minute when he collected Prso's pass and hit a shot on the turn from 12-yards which bounced off the top of the bar on its way over.

However, Gordon Strachan's Celtic were worthy winners in the first Old Firm match of the season to open up a seven-point advantage over Paul Le Guen's Rangers.
