Former Arsenal player Sol Campbell discovered his exclusion from the England squad by voicemail

England defender Sol Campbell has claimed he was told he had been left out of new manager Steve McClaren's first squad - by answer-phone.

The Portsmouth centre-back, currently top of the league with Harry Redknapp's team, follows David Beckham in claiming he was cast aside by McClaren.

He said: 'He [McClaren] left one message on the answer-phone to tell me I wasn't in the first squad. That was it. We haven't spoken since.

'Maybe he could have done it differently. I have got 69 caps but that's the way he runs his show now.

'All I can do is play for Pompey, that's it. Whatever will be will be. It's not up to me if I can still play for England but I would never turn my back on England.'
