County rely on youngsters for victory

Kildare County's youngsters combined to give them a 4-2 victory over Monaghan United at Station Road in the eircom League First Division tonight.

Mark Gibson struck his second goal in three games on his full debut while 17-year-old Paddy Mahon netted his first eircom League goal.

Kildare started the brighter and Alan McDermott headed a Stephen Cooling corner just over the bar before County had a great chance to take the lead after 37 minutes. Paddy Mahon was tripped inside the box by Darren Sargent but Tadhg Murphy superbly saved Stephen Cooling's penalty kick.

However, Cooling made amends two minutes later when he smashed home from 14 yards after Mahon had flicked on Clancy's cross.

Kildare couldn't make it to half time with their lead intact and Darren Sargent equalised right on the stroke of half time when he bundled home from close range.

Gibson then put Kildare back in front after 61 minutes when he tapped home the rebound after Murphy had saved from Bowers.

Local lad, Paddy Mahon put Kildare further in front when he took full advantage of a collision between Shane McGeown and Barry Burke to race clear before shooting low past Murphy.

Kildare put the icing on the cake in the 83rd minute when Phillip Byrne headed home a Stephen Cooling free kick before Paul Smyth scored a consolation with a fine volley but Kildare held on to record just their fourth home win of the season.
