Ferguson backs Keane purchases

Alex Ferguson has backed Roy Keane's judgement in his transfer deadline-day spending spree.

Just two days after being unveiled as Sunderland's new boss, Keane took the plunge in dramatic fashion, signing six players in total, including headline-grabbing striker Dwight Yorke.

Keane's former Manchester United team-mate will miss the trip to Derby after only just arriving in England following his move from Australian club Sydney FC.

However, having allowed Yorke to train with his own side prior to the World Cup, Ferguson knows just what an asset the Trinidad and Tobago favourite can be.

And, in another United old-boy Liam Miller and former Wigan midfielder Graham Kavanagh, Ferguson believes Keane's assessment is spot on.

'Dwight is a fantastic signing,' said Ferguson.

'He was brilliant when he trained with us last season and when you look at his statistics from the World Cup, he won the ball more times than any other player.

'Liam Miller is a terrific addition as well because I believe him to be a very good player, it was just that the number of midfielders I have at United made it very difficult for him.

'Kavanagh has the experience of playing in the Premiership and Roy knows him from the Republic of Ireland, so that is three good signings.'

Keane has not spoken to Ferguson since the transfer window closed, although he was constantly on the phone in the days before, proving the Irishman's previous assertion he is not afraid to seek advice.

'Roy probably got fed up of phoning me,' said Ferguson.

'He was a bit worried about whether he could get anyone in on the final day.

'All I tried to tell him was it didn't really matter because even if he didn't get anyone, the performance Sunderland produced against West Brom last week was better than any signing.'
