Division One leaders Shamrock Rovers escaped Century Homes Park with a point, holding off a great Monaghan United effort while reduced to ten men after Andy Mylers's first-half sending off, the game finishing 2-2.

Myler saw red for elbowing United defender Paul Whelan in the 32nd minute.

The setback seemed to rouse a hitherto lifeless Rovers, and Pat Scully's men went in front in the 36th minute.

Ray Kenny's corner was flicked on by David Cassidy and Mark O'Brien arrived late in the box to power the ball home.

Two minutes into the second half Monaghan equalised when David Lee latched on to Jimmy Fullam's pass and struck a great first-time shot from the edge of the box.

Admirably, depleted Rovers committed themselves all-out to attack, and were rewarded with a fantastic goal in the 68th minute.

Anto Flood drove a first-time volley on the turn from 20 yards that
flew past United keeper Tadgh Murphy into the roof of the net.

Rovers goalkeeper Barry Murphy kept his side in front with a terrific 73rd minute save, tipping Austin McCann's long-range effort over the crossbar.

But Murphy was a helpless spectator when United full-back Michael Kerr stepped up to a 78th minute free-kick and struck the ball low into the bottom corner to bring the sides level once again.

Rovers substitute Ger Rowe had a great opportunity to win the game in added time but elected to pass to Flood rather than go for goal himself.
