Roy Keane has officially signed a contract to become the manager of Championship side Sunderland.

The former Manchester United captain agreed to a three-year deal with the Stadium of Light side.

'This represents a major coup for our football club,' Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn told the club website.

'The fact that one of the most influential figures in world football is willing to come here should make all the Sunderland fans very happy.'

Sunderland have also confirmed that Leicester's Tony Loughlan, will be Keane's head coach rather than former Blackburn boss Brian Kidd, as had been speculated.

Quinn added: 'Roy Keane's standards of professionalism are legendary and his desire and determination to succeed are precisely what this club requires.

'Let's all support and enjoy one of football's true greats as he embarks on what we all hope will be a fantastic new chapter in Sunderland Football Club's rich and proud history.'

In the light of today's victory, Quinn believes Keane's arrival is already starting to have an effect.

He added: 'He brought a buzz to the place. They showed they wanted to play for the manager, they were playing for their futures.'

Quinn insists his past problems with Keane are now history and he is confident he will do a good job for the club.

Quinn sided with Mick McCarthy following Keane's infamous row with the former Ireland manager prior to the World Cup in 2002.

'The only thing I would say is that chairman and managers row - we just got ours out of the way earlier,' Quinn added.
