Madlung drafted into Germany squad

Germany coach Joachim Low has called up Wolfsburg defender Alexander Madlung to replace the injured Christoph Metzelder for the forthcoming Euro 2008 qualifiers.

Metzelder pulled out of the squad to face the Republic of Ireland and San Marino with a knee injury.

Madlung, who has been a regular member of the Germany Under-21 set-up, could now make his senior debut in an inexperienced defence which also includes Manuel Friedrich and Malik Fathi, both of whom made their debuts along with the new coach in a 3-0 win over Sweden earlier this month.

'Alexander Madlung has played 13 times for the Under-21s and performed very well,' said Low.

'Furthermore, he has already experienced European football with Hertha Berlin.

'He is strong in the tackle and a good header of the ball with good potential.'

Madlung moved to Wolfsburg this summer from Berlin, where he had also been used as an emergency striker on several occasions, scoring 11 goals in 87 Bundesliga games.
