West Ham United have been hit by injuries ahead of their opening Barclays Premiership clash with Charlton Athletic.

Striker Dean Ashton is out until at least mid-November after breaking his ankle training with England.

Winger Matthew Etherington (knee) plus new signings Jonathan Spector (shoulder), Robert Green (groin) and George McCartney (ankle) are all unavailable.

But Anton Ferdinand, Danny Gabbidon and Yossi Benayoun all came through midweek international duty unscathed.

New Charlton boss Iain Dowie must decide which of his summer signings to include for tomorrow's opener.

Goalkeeper Scott Carson, centre-half Gonzalo Sorondo and striker Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink look set to start, while Andy Reid, Djimi Traore, Amady Faye and Simon Walton could all make the squad.

Costa Rica winger Cristian Bolanos is, however, awaiting a work permit, young striker James Walker (ankle) remains doubtful while American defender Cory Gibbs (knee) and winger Jerome Thomas (foot) are both longer-term absentees.

West Ham squad: Carroll, Pantsil, Gabbidon, Ferdinand, Konchesky, Bowyer, Benayoun, Reo-Coker, Mullins, Harewood, Zamora, Walker, Mears, Collins, Tomkins, Dailly, Reid, Cole, Sheringham, Ephraim.
