Cronin confirmed as new Waterford boss

Waterford United have unveiled former Dublin City assistant Gareth Cronin as their new manager.

The 31-year-old Cork man had a distinguished career as a player with over 400 appearances for Cork City as well as fifty appearances for Shamrock Rovers.

Cronin was also capped for the Republic of Ireland at underage level. His playing career was curtailed by a knee injury in 2003.

'This is a wonderful opportunity to manage a club that has such a distinguished past,' said Cronin.

'I am looking forward to the challenge, as this club has a proud tradition and having met the people involved, I share their desire for success.

'This will be a tough assignment but I am ready for it. Waterford battled hard against Cork at the weekend and deserved their point so it shows that there is potential in the team and we still have a cup campaign.'

Cronin is expected to meet the players for the first time this evening and with no league game this coming weekend, he will have two weeks to prepare the team before his first eircom League encounter against Drogheda United at the RSC.
