Redknapp's Sol searching is nearly over

Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp is hoping to conclude his chase for a world-class defender today by signing Sol Campbell.

Redknapp last night described Campbell as 'just the type we need' as he appeared to be closing in on a deal for the England centre-back.

While a report suggested late interest from Manchester City in Campbell, it was in Portsmouth yesterday that the former Arsenal and Tottenham player undertook a medical.

Redknapp told Sky Sports News: 'We have been talking to Sol. Hopefully he will join us. It's not done yet, but hopefully it will be. He will bring great experience, he's a good player. I still think he has a great deal to offer.

'I would be really pleased and it will be great if we can get him. He is a good player, a really strong character and just the type we need.'

Campbell, 31, received attractive approaches from clubs in Turkey and France - Fenerbahce and Marseille - after being released on a free transfer by Arsenal.

The news of him being poised to sign for another English club caught Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger by surprise.

Campbell originally announced he was to leave Arsenal 'for a fresh challenge' adding: 'I have nothing left to prove in England but it would be special if I could now go to the continent and make a major statement in a foreign league too.'

Wenger last night said: 'I have no regrets, but it is a big surprise to me because he cancelled his contract to go abroad. Have you sold Portsmouth to a foreign country? No.'

Pompey were tying up a one-year deal, with the option of another 12 months, for Campbell, whose contract was paid up by Arsenal last month.

Despite the huge influx of cash new owner Alexandre Gaydamak has brought to the south coast club, Portsmouth have been cautious over Campbell.

He is available on a free transfer but would command a weekly salary of around £40,000 - about half his earnings at Highbury - and has a history of calf and ankle problems.
