Wolves have signed Republic of Ireland centre-back Gary Breen on a two-year contract.

The 32-year-old was a free agent after parting company with Sunderland at the end of last season and has now penned a deal with managerless Wanderers.

Reports in the West Midlands suggest Breen could soon be linking up with his former Black Cats boss, Mick McCarthy, who is being tipped to succeed Glenn Hoddle in the Molineux hotseat.

Breen said: 'Talks have been ongoing throughout the summer and I'm happy it's now been completed and I can get down to things.

'Things are different for Wolves at this time, and a lot like they were at Sunderland two years ago when a lot of the experienced players left and young players were brought into the side, along with players from the lower leagues. It wasn't easy but we won the First Division Championship that year.

'I'm excited by the prospect of playing my part in helping the club mount a challenge.'
