3-2 Rodriguez pulls one back for Argentina.

2-1 Ayala shoots weakly into Lehmann's arms. Advantage Germany.

2-1 Ballack plays a captain's role with a penalty of conviction despite being in pain.

1-1 Cruz finds the top left corner to equalise.

1-0 Neuville scores Germany's first from the spot.

Former German number one Oliver Kahn offers words of encouragement to bitter rival Lehmann.

120 mins: Full-time of extra-time: Germany 1-1 Argentina. The game will be decided by penalties after an absorbing contest ended 1-1.

119 mins: Tevez shoots wildly over as Argentina press for a winner with penalties looming.

118 mins: Ballack leaves the pitch to receive treatment and returns looking visibly exhausted.

115 mins: Coloccini launches an optimistic shot goalwards, Ronaldinho v England style, and hits the crossbar under the watchful eye of Lehmann, who had it covered all the way.

114 mins: Fabricio Coloccini drives forward from right back and sends a stinging drive narrowly wide from 25 yards. Friedrich is booked for a foul on Tevez.

110 mins: Odonkor's dangerous cross from the right sees Ayala head clear despite being fouled.

109 mins: Both sides are looking tired and are guilty of careless passes as tensions continue to rise in Berlin.

106 mins: Ballack resumes with new footwear.

Half-time of extra-time: Germany 1-1 Argentina.

105 mins: Gonzalez pulls a right foot volley wide with better options inside the box.

101 mins: Germany force their fourth corner of the match after good work by Odonkor on the right. Christoph Metzelder heads over.

98 mins: Ballack goes down rather easily in the box after Ayala strikes him in the face with a flailing arm, but the referee rules in favour of the Argentine.

95 mins: Cruz is correctly booked for leading with the elbow against Lahm.

93 mins: A typically frenetic start sees several stern challenges exchanged.

91 mins: Germany kick-off the start of extra-time, with both teams having exhausted their compliment of three substitutions.

Full-time: Germany 1-1 Argentina. There will be extra-time in Berlin with the sides finishing level after 90 minutes. And you'd have to fancy Germany to advance, especially with the cautiously defensive nature of Jose Pekerman's substitutions.

90+4 mins: Odonkor is booked for a lunge on Cambiasso.

90 mins: There will be four minutes of added time.

89 mins: A superb header from Gonzalez forces an excellent save from Lehmann, but play is called back with Tevez in an offside position.

88 mins: Rodriguez is correctly booked for diving under a challenge from Philipp Lahm.

85 mins: Germany send in a couple of dangerous crosses as they chase a winner, but they fail to test Franco. Oliver Neuville comes on for Klose as the clock ticks down.

80 mins: GOAL! Ballack crosses from the left for Barowski to flick on and Klose heads home from close range. Game on! 1-1.

79 mins: Julio Cruz comes on for Crespo in a straight swap at centre forward, which means Lionel Messi will not feature in this match.

76 mins: Tevez's pace sees him nick the ball from Odonkor as the latter steadied to shoot. However, the Argentine went down under the momentum of his own efforts and is incorrectly awarded a free, which Podolski crashes off the wall.

74 mins: Tim Barowski on for Schweinsteiger.

73 mins: Tevez pounces on a stray pass 30 yards out and finds Maxi Rodriguez, who hits the side-netting with a right-footed drive from the edge of the box.

72 mins: Esteban Cambiasso is introduced for the ineffective Riquelme, who has been largely subdued throughout.

70 mins: Goalkeeper Abbondanzieri goes down in pain with Germany preparing to take a free-kick, and he is replaced by Leonardo Franco, who has three caps to his name. Schweinsteiger blazes over.

64 mins: Abbondanzieri flaps at a left-wing corner and the ball breaks to Ballack, whose shot comes back off Ayala's shoulder. Germany have been well on top since the goal and Odonkor's pace and trickery should test the booked Sorin.

62 mins: David Odonkor comes on for Schneider.

61 mins: Ayala is lucky not to concede a penalty when the referee fails to see him dragging Ballack to the ground.

60 mins: Mascherano is booked for a foul on Schneider near the right corner flag. Podolski wastes the chance by driving the ball high and wide.

54 mins: Germany up the tempo and send a series of crosses into the Argentina box without much joy. The goal should prompt a more adventurous approach from the hosts, who have been content to sit back and hit on the counter-attack until now.

49 mins: GOAL! Roberto Ayala holds off the attentions of Miroslav Klose to head home a Riquelme corner from the right, which for the first time manages to clear the front post. It's no more than the Argentinians deserve after their commanding first-half showing. 0-1.

47 mins: Tevez blazes over from outside the box and raises a cheer from the crowd when it hits a steward.

46 mins: Sorin is booked for a calculated foul on Friedrich and he will miss the semi-final if Argentina advance as it is his second booking of the knockout phase.

46 mins: Germany kick-off with no changes for either side.

Half-time: Germany 0-0 Argentina

45 mins: Podolski is caught by Heinze near the right goal-line, but Bastian Schweinsteiger's cross is headed clear. Referee Michel then blows for half-time following a very disappointing opening 45 minutes. Let's hope for better after the break.

41 mins: A terrific turn and nutmeg by Carlos Tevez is followed by a foul by his marker Friedrich.

40 mins: Argentina have enjoyed almost 70% of the possession but have failed to make their dominance count on the scoreboard.

38 mins: The Argentinian fans are beginning to find their voice despite being outnumbered by nine or ten to one by the German fans. This, despite nothing much to cheer for either side in the last 20 minutes.

29 mins: Arne Friedrich breaks impressively from right back, but his progress is checked by a foul from Sorin. It's beginning to descend into a game of attrition, not what you'd have expected from such fine teams.

26 mins: The game is becoming a midfield battle with neither team gaining the upper hand, and as such chances are few and far between in the final third.

24 mins: Sorin, Tevez and Riquelme combine effectively down Germany's right flank but Ballack comes back to halt their progress and regain possession for his side.

19 mins: Captain Juan Pablo Sorin fails to keep another poorly-struck near-post corner from Riquelme in play and another chance is lost.

16 mins: A rare error by Michael Ballack hands possession back to Argentina, but they fail to capitalise when Maxi Rodriguez goes down at the edge of the area. Referee Lubos Michel is unconvinced by his appeals and waves play on and Germany break at pace, with Bernd Schneider crossing from the right for Ballack to head narrowly over. You'd expect the Chelsea man to finish from that range, but Argentina have been let off the hook.

13 mins: Argentina are beginning to find some rhythm with their passing, but they have yet to register a telling shot on Jens Lehmann's goal.

8 mins: Riquelme's near-post corner causes a moment of uncertainty in the German defence before the ball is cleared.

7 mins: Podolski's free-kick from 25 yards is fumbled by Argentina goalkeeper Roberto Abbondanzieri, but he gathers at the second attempt.

5 mins: The opening five minutes have been cagey and scrappy, with neither team taking control. The whistling of the home fans when Argentina are in possession is deafening!

4 mins: Lukas Podolski receives the first booking for a foul on Javier Mascherano.

3 mins: An early free-kick from Gabriel Heinze is penalised for a foul in the box.

1 min: Argentina kick-off in front of a large partisan crowd in Berlin.

German captain Michael ballack wins the toss and elects to keep the teams as they are, with Germany attacking from left to right.
