Full-time: Portugal beat Mexico 2-1 in Gelsenkirchen in what was a hugely entertaining and committed contest to secure their place in the last 16 as Group D winners. Mexico will join them in the second round after Angola drew 1-1 with Iran in Leipzig.

92 mins Boa Morte and Gomes link up to give Maniche another shot on goal, but the midfielder's drilled shot is turned away by Sanchez.

90 mins Gomes is the latest to go into Michel's book for another nothing-tackle.

Fouls commited count reads Mexico 28-18 Portugal.

88 mins Boa Morte goes into the book, while Fonseca tests Ricardo with a curling effort which lacked any real power.

87 mins Mexican substitute Zinha is booked for a foul on Simao.

82 mins Update from Leipzig: Iran 1-1 Angola. Iran equalise with a header from Bakhtiarizadeh on 76 minutes. Mexican fans greet this development with obvious glee as that should see them through to the last 16.

82 mins Another superb Marquez tackle sees Simao's cross deflected into Boa Morte's path, but he skies his shot high and wide.

80 mins Luis Boa Morte comes on for Figo, while Guilermo Franco replaces defender Mario Mendez.

77 mins Carlos Salcido crosses for Fonseca, who manages to get a header in despite the close attentions of two Portuguese defenders. The effort goes wide though.

76 mins Figo and Gomes combine to prise an opening for Maniche, but his drive from outside the box goes well over.

72 mins Nuno Gomes, who replaced Postiga minutes earlier, is denied from the edge of the six yard box by a last-ditch tackle from Marquez.

69 mins Mexico's Gonzalo Pineda is replaced by Jose Antonio Castro. Andres Guardado also comes on.

69 mins Maniche is booked for a deliberate handball near the halfway line.

67 mins Update from Leipzig: Angola go 1-0 up with a header from Flavio on the hour.

65 mins Marquez is wrongly booked when Simao goes down despite not being touched by the Mexican.

64 mins Bravo escapes the offside trap superbly, but having done the hard part, he wildly scoops his shot over the bar. Again, Portugal are let off the hook.

60 mins RED CARD! Perez is sent-off after he receives his second yellow card for diving in the box. Miguel is again at the centre of the action as Perez appeals for a penalty following his over-robust challenge. Mexico will face an uphill battle to get back on terms.

57 mins MISSED PEN! Mexico miss a golden chance to equalise when Miguel takes Perez down in the box for a clear penalty. However, Bravo's effort from the spot goes high and wide as Portugal are let off the hook.

52 mins Another free-kick from Pardo is pulled harmlessly wide.

49 mins A disappointing free-kick from Pardo is easily gathered by Ricardo. Again, the Mexicans have started brightly as they try to restore parity. However, it must be remembered that Portugal have decided to start without five key players who are all on yellow cards, including Deco and Ronaldo.

46 mins Portugal kick-off the second-half hoping to continue their 16-match unbeaten run. The last side to beat them was Brian Kerr's Republic of Ireland, who beat them 1-0 at Lansdowne Road thanks to an Andy O'Brien goal.

HALF-TIME: Portugal 2-1 Mexico

46 mins The lively Fonseca and Bravo combine but the former pulls his shot over. An absorbing and entertaining first half ends with the Europeans leading 2-1. In Leipzig, it's still 0-0 between Iran and Angola. As it stands, Mexico will join Portugal in the second round.

45 mins Twice in two minutes the buoyant Mexicans go close to equalising through Pavel Pardo and Fonseca, but Portugal hang on to their slender cushion.

43 mins Maniche tests Sanchez with a long range shot. The shot count reads 6-5 in Portugal's favour.

39 mins Mexcian striker Bravo crosses for Fonseca who sees his header narrowly sail over.

38 mins Portugal win their fourth corner of the match when Simao's free-kick from all of 35 yards is deflected behind. The corner is cleared with ease.

33 mins Marquez's header from a free-kick on the left is deflected behind for a corner, which Portugal clear.

29 mins GOAL! Fonseca capitalises from the resulting corner with a thundering header from seven yards, with the Portuguese marking sadly lacking. Game on! 2-1.

29 mins Bravo forces an excellent save from Ricardo with a close range drive.

28 mins Helder Postiga is denied by Sanchez and Maniche's follow-up sails harmlessly over.

26 mins Portugal's Miguel and Mexico's Perez are booked a minute apart.

24 mins GOAL! Long-term Liverpool target Simao keeps his cool to drive the ball past Oswaldo Sanchez from the spot. He even fits in an Aldridge-style shuffle on his run-up. 2-0.

23 mins Rafael Marquez carelessly concedes a penalty for deliberate handball.

21 mins Maniche's direct surge with the ball into the box is stopped prematurely by Luis Perez, although Francisco Rodriguez is then shown a yellow card by referee Lubos Michel.

19 mins Portugal earn their first corner of the game when Luis Figo's drive into the box is halted by a Mexican defender. The corner is easily cleared by Mexico.

15 mins After a bright start by the Mexicans, Portugal continue to do enough to deny them any meaningful sight on goal. The Mexicans know a defeat today and a high scoring win for Angola over Iran will see them miss out on the last 16. It's still 0-0 in Leipzig.

8 mins Omar Bravo, with two goals to his credit in two games, goes close minutes later when he sends a looping, toe-poked effort go close to equalising.

6 mins GOAL! Maniche opens the scoring for Portugal with a superbly worked goal. Simao Sabrosa broke down the left flank and squared for the in-rushing Maniche to hammer home from 15 yards. 1-0.

2 mins Jose Fonseca breaks through the Portuguese reargaurd but drills a low shot into Ricardo's arms. The Mexicans have started with intent.

1 min Mexico kick-off with the roof closed on the stadium in Gelsenkirchen.
