Kahn confident of World Cup success

Oliver Kahn believes Germany can better their performance at the 2002 World Cup and win the competition in their homeland.

In Japan and South Korea four years ago, an unfancied Germany side made it all the way to the final where they were eventually beaten by Brazil.

Now on home soil and with the weight of expectation on their shoulders, Germany are in a more familiar role as one of the favourites for World Cup glory this summer.

And goalkeeper Kahn believes the experience from four years ago will help them overcome the pressure.

"Nobody gave us a chance in 2002," he said.

"Everybody thought we would go out early but the players didn't let that bother them and grew stronger together game-by-game.

"Since then, our confidence levels have risen, the whole team has been given a huge motivational boost and there were a lot of admirers of our team, which also helped us go further.

"We can certainly take on board that experience and, if everything falls into place, anything is possible," added Kahn.

Kahn, who lost out to Jens Lehmann in the race to be first-choice goalkeeper for the tournament, has also extolled the importance of there being unity within the squad if Germany are to lift the World Cup for a fourth time on July 9.

"Personal aims cannot play a role within the group," he added.

"I am here to represent Germany and that is my motivation.

"I am really looking forward to doing my bit for Germany and with the tournament being in our own country, that should give us a real boost."
