Tottenham midfielder Edgar Davids insists his country can spring a World Cup surprise.

Dutch coach Marco Van Basten surprised the nation when he omitted the likes of Davids, Clarence Seedorf, Roy Makaay and Patrick Kluivert from his squad for the finals.

But despite the disappointment of being left at home, Davids believes it is the beginning of a new era for The Netherlands.

Davids said: "That is how you start a new cycle - maybe in a couple of years time you will know these players!

"It was a big disappointment for me but I have played in the World Cup already and I can tell you it is a beautiful experience.

"I am happy I have had that experience and I am hoping the lads do well and win."

Davids was also full of praise for England's chances of winning the trophy this summer - pointing to the midfield as the key to their potential.

The Dutch veteran added: "I think the obvious countries - Brazil, France, Argentina, England, while Holland could be one of the outsiders who can surprise everybody.

"England have the strongest midfield players. It is one thing to have players with energy to get up and down, but it is another to have players who can score so easily when they get in the box. That is a blessing.

"If Michael Carrick is the holding player he can feed them and they can have the benefit of his passing."
