FAI Cup holders Drogheda made a tame exit as Shane Guerin struck the only goal of the game to put Limerick in the third round at United Park tonight.

After a forgettable first half Lims struck in the 49th minute when Paul Rose intercepted Stephen Bradley's pass and picked out Guerin who fired home from 12 yards.

Drogheda raised their game but struggled to break down a resolute Limerick defence.

Drogheda captain Declan O'Brien had the ball in the net but was booked for using his hand to divert Keith Fahy's cross past keeper Noel Mooney.

The skipper wasted a late chance when he headed wide from six yards and the First Division side held on for a thoroughly deserved victory.
