Derry close in on Drogheda

Derry City moved to within one point of Drogheda United following this deserved 2-0 victory over reigning champions Cork City in the eircom League Premier Division tonight.

Derry opened the scoring in the 44 minute in fortuitous circumstances.

A clearance from Cork’s John O’Flynn struck the back of Danny Murphy’s head before rebounding to the net.

But there was nothing fortunate about Derry’s second goal in the 55 minute.

Man of the match Paddy McCourt weaved his magic on the right and his low cross into the area was driven home by Ciaran Martyn.
