Fernando Martin has resigned as president of Real Madrid after just two months in the post.
The Real board unanimously accepted Martin's decision at a board meeting and announced there would be an election to decide the new president at the end of the season.
Luis Gomez-Montejano will take over as club president in the interim.
Martin took over the post on February 27 following the resignation of long-standing president Florentino Perez.
Perez, who replaced Lorenzo Sanz in 2000, was less than two years into hissecond term as Real president, having been re-elected in July 2004.
The 58-year-old Martin was a 'running mate' of Perez in his leadership campaign in 1995, when he lost to Sanz, and again in the victorious bid of 2000, establishing himself as a key member of Perez's board.
Perez hoped his decision to step down would act as a wake-up call to the club's under-performing team, which had failed to win a major trophy since their 2003 league triumph.
