Shelbourne owner and chief executive Ollie Byrne has confirmed that he is to hold talks with controversial lawyer Giovanni di Stefano, who has made an enquiry about buying the club.

Byrne confirmed an approach has been made by the Italian on the official Shelbourne website, www.shelbournefc.ie. "We know very little about him and out of courtesy we have accepted his invitation to meet with us," he said.

He added: "We will approach the meeting with open minds and listen to what he has to say. Our primary and overriding concern is to secure the future of Shelbourne FC."

Di Stefano is an Italian-born lawyer who has worked on a number on high profile cases, and claims to have met with Saddam Hussein on no less than three occasions for business purposes.

He also became a director of Dundee Football Club in 1999, attracting such star names as Fabrizio Ravanelli and Craig Burley before he left the club in acrimonious circumstances in 2004.

Di Stefano claims to have a personal fortune of £450million and has also been linked with Dundee United recently.
