Rangers fans have cancelled their planned protest at Hearts on Sunday in order to pay tribute to Scotland and Celtic legend Jimmy Johnstone.

The Rangers Supporters' Assembly, angry at Hearts' decision to slash the visitors' ticket allocation from 3500 to 2100, were ready to demonstrate before the Bank of Scotland Premier League match at Tynecastle.

But assembly president Jim Templeton insists the occasion should be about remembering Johnstone who died on Monday after losing a long battle with motor neurone disease.

He told the Daily Record: "We had planned to have a peaceful and colourful protest before the game. But after discussions with our delegates we feel it would be inappropriate in the wake of Jimmy Johnstone's passing.

"Sunday is a day for Scottish football to celebrate the life on one of its heroes. The last thing we want to do is get in the way of that and it was unanimous in deciding to cancel it."

Templeton added: "Jinky was a Celtic and Scotland legend and was a player I had the privilege to watch many times but for a Rangers fan it wasn't always a pleasure as he destroyed us many times.

"He had the rare ability to cross the Old Firm divide and someone who Rangers fans could have an affection for."
